A Primer for Forgetting: Getting Past the Past is a nonfiction work by Lewis Hyde that blends cultural criticism, philosophy, autobiography, and literary reflection. Rather than treating memory as an unquestioned good, Hyde examines forgetfulness as a complex human faculty that can support healing, creativity, forgiveness, and social renewal. The book moves across myth, literature, history, trauma, and religion to ask when remembering is necessary and when forgetting may be equally important. Hyde draws on sources ranging from ancient Greek thought to modern writers and public figures, using them to build a broad argument about the uses and dangers of memory. The result is not a practical manual in the usual sense, but a thoughtful inquiry into how individuals and communities live with painful inheritances, cultural records, and personal loss.
