A True History of the United States by Daniel A. Sjursen is a critical work of American history that challenges patriotic and consensus accounts of the national past. Written by a retired Army major, combat veteran, and former history instructor at West Point, the book grew out of a course Sjursen taught to cadets and is positioned as a corrective to simplified civic mythology. Its subtitle identifies the central frame: Indigenous genocide, racialized slavery, hyper-capitalism, militarist imperialism, and other neglected dimensions of American exceptionalism. Rather than presenting United States history as a steady march toward freedom, Sjursen examines how ideals of liberty have repeatedly coexisted with conquest, exclusion, coerced labor, class power, and overseas violence. The book belongs to the tradition of revisionist and peoples history, comparable in purpose to Howard Zinns A Peoples History of the United States, while distinguished by the author military background and classroom experience.
