AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Cannot, and How to Tell the Difference is a 2024 nonfiction critique of contemporary artificial intelligence by Princeton computer scientists Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor. Written for non-specialists as well as decision makers, it examines the gap between technical reality and the claims attached to AI products. Its central term, AI snake oil, refers to systems marketed as capable of solving problems that their data, design, or operating conditions cannot reliably support. The book does not treat all AI as fraudulent. Instead, it distinguishes useful applications, especially forms of generative AI, from high stakes predictive systems that claim to forecast complicated human outcomes. Through accessible explanations of machine learning, real world deployment, labor, bias, and regulation, the authors argue for practical AI literacy. They also challenge the tendency to frame speculative machine superintelligence as the primary danger, redirecting attention toward present harms created by institutions that use imperfect systems without adequate accountability.
