First published in 1956, An Introduction to Cybernetics is W. Ross Ashby’s foundational textbook on the study of regulation, communication, and behavior in complex systems. Written for readers in biology, psychology, sociology, and related fields, it deliberately treats organisms and machines through common formal questions: what states can a system occupy, how does it change, what disturbances affect it, and how can it remain stable? Ashby organizes the book into Mechanism, Variety, and Regulation and Control. He develops its arguments through simple formal models, diagrams, examples, and graded exercises rather than advanced mathematics. The result is not a history of computing or a guide to building particular machines. It is a conceptual toolkit for analyzing any system whose behavior can be observed and influenced. Its central contribution is to make control a problem of handling possibilities. Ashby shows why effective regulation depends on the range of responses available to a controller, the constraints imposed on a system, and the information conveyed through feedback.
