John R. Pierce's An Introduction to Information Theory: Symbols, Signals and Noise is a foundational popular-technical introduction to the mathematics and engineering of communication. First developed in the era when telephone networks, radio, television, and satellite links were rapidly expanding, the book explains the ideas associated with Claude Shannon without treating them as merely specialist formulas. Pierce presents communication as a disciplined process: a source produces messages, messages are represented by symbols, signals carry those symbols through a physical channel, and noise threatens their recovery. From this framework, he introduces binary representation, entropy, encoding, and the limits that channels impose on reliable transmission. The book also considers language, psychology, cybernetics, physics, and art, showing why information theory became influential beyond electrical engineering. Its purpose is not to provide a modern coding-theory manual or a problem-heavy textbook. Rather, it equips readers to understand what information theory measures, what it deliberately leaves aside, and why its central limits still shape digital communication, compression, and computation.
