Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language is a 2019 work of popular linguistics by Canadian linguist Gretchen McCulloch. It examines the informal written language that developed through chat rooms, texting, social media, memes, emojis, and other networked settings. Rather than treating online communication as damaged standard English or as a wholly unprecedented code, McCulloch studies it as a living linguistic genre with recognizable conventions, history, and social purposes. Her central concern is how people compensate for the missing cues of face to face conversation, such as vocal tone, timing, gesture, and shared context. The book explains why apparently small choices, including punctuation, capitalization, repetition, abbreviations, and images, can carry substantial interpersonal meaning online. It also places these choices in a longer history of writing and technological change. Written for a general audience, the book combines linguistic concepts with familiar examples to show that internet language is neither random nor careless. Its purpose is descriptive: to make the hidden rules that proficient online communicators already use more visible.
