Charles Sumner: Conscience of a Nation is a historical biography by Zaakir Tameez about the Massachusetts senator who became one of the most forceful antislavery and civil rights figures of the nineteenth century. Sumner is often remembered for the 1856 caning by Representative Preston Brooks after his speech against the expansion of slavery into Kansas, but this book places that episode within a much wider political, legal, and personal life. Tameez presents Sumner as an abolitionist legislator, a constitutional thinker, an ally of Black activists, and a central figure in the transformation of American law during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The biography also revisits older interpretations that treated Sumner mainly as vain, abrasive, or impractical. Instead, it argues that his moral absolutism, personal vulnerability, and legal imagination were inseparable from his public work. The book is aimed at readers interested in American history, constitutional development, Reconstruction, and the origins of modern civil rights thought.
