Dataclysm: Who We Are When We Think No One Is Looking is a 2014 nonfiction book by Christian Rudder, a cofounder of OkCupid and the writer behind its influential OkTrends analyses. It belongs to the popular science and data-driven social commentary genres, using large digital records to examine behavior that surveys, interviews, and laboratory studies may miss. Rudder draws substantially on aggregated activity from online dating, while also considering material from services such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Tumblr. His purpose is not merely to display surprising correlations. He argues that the expanding record of online choices, searches, messages, ratings, and connections can make collective human preferences more visible. The book addresses attraction, race, language, political identity, migration, popularity, and online anger, often through vivid charts and deliberately provocative examples. At the same time, it recognizes that this new observational power creates serious questions about privacy, consent, interpretation, and the limits of data drawn from particular platforms. Dataclysm is therefore both an account of emerging computational social science and a reflection on what pervasive digital traces reveal and conceal.
