Designing Games: A Guide to Engineering Experiences is a 2013 instructional book on game design by Tynan Sylvester, a designer known for later creating RimWorld and for work on BioShock Infinite. Published by O Reilly Media, it treats games less as collections of features or stories than as systems deliberately built to produce player experiences. Its central concern is emotional design: how rules, player choices, audiovisual fiction, pacing, and social interaction combine to create feelings such as tension, relief, achievement, fear, trust, or betrayal. Sylvester does not offer a fixed recipe for a successful game. Instead, he provides concepts for judging design tradeoffs and for observing what a game actually causes players to feel and do. The book also addresses the practical realities of production, including playtesting, iteration, team communication, planning, and market positioning. It is therefore both a theory of interactive experience and a working guide for designers who need to turn uncertain creative intentions into testable game systems.
