Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist is a non-fiction economics book by Kate Raworth that challenges the assumptions of mainstream economic thought and proposes a new framework for judging human prosperity. Built around the image of a doughnut, the book defines a safe and just space for humanity between two sets of limits: the social foundations that everyone should have access to, such as food, health, education, housing, and political voice, and the ecological ceilings that society must not overshoot, such as climate stability, biodiversity, and freshwater use. Raworth’s purpose is not simply to criticize GDP-centered thinking, but to replace it with a more workable model for the 21st century. Drawing from ecological, behavioral, feminist, institutional, and complexity economics, she argues that economies should be designed to be distributive, regenerative, and less dependent on growth.
