Fundamentals of Biochemistry: Life at the Molecular Level is a comprehensive undergraduate textbook by Donald Voet, Judith G. Voet, and Charlotte W. Pratt. The fifth edition, published by Wiley in 2016, surveys biochemistry from foundational chemistry through biomolecular structure, enzymology, metabolism, and gene expression. Its organizing purpose is to show how molecular properties generate cellular processes and, in turn, affect physiology, disease, and experimental science. Rather than treating pathways as lists to memorize, the text connects chemical principles such as bonding, energetics, equilibrium, and molecular recognition to biological function. It gives substantial attention to proteins, membranes, nucleic acids, energy conversion, and information flow, while incorporating developments in structural biology, genomics, and bioinformatics. Extensive figures, process diagrams, guided visual materials, calculations, and applied exercises support a course-centered approach. The result is a broad, chemically grounded reference intended to develop both conceptual understanding and the analytical habits required for further study in biology, medicine, and the life sciences.
