Published in 1979 and awarded the Pulitzer Prize, Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is an interdisciplinary work by Douglas R. Hofstadter on logic, cognition, meaning, and artificial intelligence. Rather than treating mathematics, visual art, and music as separate subjects, Hofstadter uses Kurt Gödel, M. C. Escher, and J. S. Bach to investigate patterns that recur across them: recursion, self-reference, symmetry, and levels of description. Its central question is how a conscious self, capable of referring to itself and attaching meaning to symbols, might arise from physical components that possess neither consciousness nor meaning on their own. Expository chapters are interwoven with playful dialogues featuring Achilles and the Tortoise, often modeled on musical forms and logical puzzles. The result is neither a standard introduction to formal logic nor a simple argument about machines. It is a deliberately constructed intellectual exploration whose form demonstrates many of the ideas it explains.
