Adrienne Mayor’s Gods and Robots: Myths, Machines, and Ancient Dreams of Technology is a work of popular ancient history and cultural analysis that examines artificial life in classical and related ancient traditions. Rather than treating robots and biotechnology as exclusively modern concerns, Mayor traces long-standing imaginative interest in beings and devices that were made rather than born. Her central term, biotechne, describes life created through craft. Through myths, literary texts, visual evidence, and accounts of ancient mechanisms, she considers bronze guardians, animated statues, self-moving objects, crafted servants, and enhanced bodies. Greek material is central, especially stories associated with Hephaestus, Talos, Daedalus, and Pygmalion, but the discussion also makes comparative use of Roman, Etruscan, Indian, Chinese, and Babylonian traditions. The purpose is not to claim that the ancients possessed modern robotics. Instead, the book shows that they could imagine artificial agents, delegated labor, and the ethical problems of human-made life long before such technologies became technically feasible.
