Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies is a business and marketing book by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, originally published by Harvard Business Press in 2008 and later revised. Drawing on the authors’ work at Forrester Research, it examines how blogs, online communities, social networks, review sites, video platforms, and similar tools shifted influence from institutions toward connected customers. Its central term, groundswell, describes a social trend in which people use technology to obtain information, help, validation, and influence from one another rather than relying solely on companies or other traditional organizations. The book is not a guide to mastering a particular platform. Instead, it provides a strategic method for deciding whether, where, and why an organization should participate in customer-led online activity. Li and Bernoff combine consumer-participation research, managerial frameworks, and recognizable business cases to show how companies can listen, converse, mobilize advocates, enable peer support, and incorporate customer input into operations. Its purpose is to replace defensive or promotional reactions to social media with disciplined, objective-led engagement.
