Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies is Jared Diamond's influential work of interdisciplinary nonfiction about the long-term causes of global inequality. First published in 1997, the book asks why some societies developed metal weapons, writing, centralized states, ocean-going ships, and epidemic diseases before others, and why Eurasian powers were able to conquer or dominate many peoples in the Americas, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. Diamond rejects explanations based on racial or innate intellectual differences. Instead, he argues that geography, ecology, available plants and animals, continental orientation, population density, and disease environments created unequal starting conditions that compounded over thousands of years. The book draws on archaeology, evolutionary biology, linguistics, ecology, and comparative history to build a broad explanation of human social development since the end of the last Ice Age. Its purpose is not to narrate every civilization in detail, but to explain the structural conditions that shaped the fates of societies.
