Hackers and Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age is a 2004 collection of essays by programmer, entrepreneur, and writer Paul Graham. Rather than serving as a conventional programming manual or startup guide, it examines the values, working methods, and social position of people who build software. Graham moves across programming languages, software design, internet businesses, open source, education, wealth creation, and free expression. The book is held together by a central comparison: capable programmers resemble painters and other makers more than laboratory scientists. They learn through practice, pursue taste and elegance, revise continuously, and create tangible work. Written during the early commercial internet era, several essays are deliberately argumentative and reflect Graham's strong preferences, especially for Lisp, small companies, and independent thinking. Its purpose is not to provide a neutral survey of technology, but to offer a coherent, provocative account of how creative technical work is done and why the culture surrounding it matters.
