Published in 1996, How Nature Works is Per Bak's popular science account of self-organized criticality, a theory developed to explain why complex systems repeatedly produce irregular yet statistically patterned change. Bak, a theoretical physicist, argues that many open systems naturally evolve toward a critical condition: neither rigidly stable nor wholly disordered. In that condition, small local disturbances can sometimes remain small and sometimes spread into cascades of every scale. The book uses the sandpile model as its guiding image, then extends the underlying logic to landscapes, earthquakes, solar flares, biological evolution, the brain, traffic, and economics. Its purpose is not to offer a universal forecasting tool or a complete explanation of every complex phenomenon. Rather, it proposes a shared conceptual language for recognizing scale-free event distributions, intermittent dynamics, and the limits of event-by-event prediction. Written for scientifically curious general readers, it combines historical explanation, simplified models, and ambitious cross-disciplinary interpretation to make a foundational idea in complexity science accessible.
