Published in 1999, How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature, and Informatics is N. Katherine Hayles’s influential scholarly study of cybernetics, digital media, literary culture, and theories of human identity. Rather than treating the posthuman as a future species or a simple fusion of flesh and machinery, Hayles investigates a historical shift in thought: the growing tendency to define persons through informational patterns rather than embodied existence. Her central concern is the cultural process through which information came to appear separable from the physical media, labor, and bodies that produce and transmit it. Combining history of science, critical theory, feminist concerns, and close readings of fiction, Hayles follows this shift from early cybernetics through artificial life and electronic textuality. The book challenges the liberal humanist image of an autonomous, self-contained individual while resisting fantasies of escaping the body through technology. Its purpose is therefore both diagnostic and constructive: to explain the origins of posthuman thought and to argue for a form of virtuality that remains accountable to material embodiment.
