Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy, by economists Carl Shapiro and Hal R. Varian, is a business strategy book about markets in which information is the central product or input. First published at the height of the Internet era, it rejects the notion that digital markets require wholly new economic laws. Instead, it applies established ideas about costs, competition, pricing, lock in, and market structure to software, media, online services, and technology standards. Its central observation is that information goods are costly to create but cheap to reproduce, a structure that changes the logic of production and competition. The book also explains why networks matter: users often value a product more when more people, complementary products, or compatible systems are connected to it. Combining economic reasoning with managerial implications, Shapiro and Varian offer a framework for decisions about product design, intellectual property, pricing, versioning, and standards battles.
