Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms is a technical textbook by David J. C. MacKay, first published by Cambridge University Press in 2003. Its defining purpose is to treat information theory, probabilistic inference, coding, and machine learning as connected parts of one intellectual framework rather than as isolated subjects. MacKay develops mathematical foundations while repeatedly tying them to working systems: data compression, error correction, pattern recognition, neural networks, and probabilistic modeling. The book is rigorous, but its presentation aims to make abstract ideas intelligible through examples, exercises, diagrams, and computational viewpoints. It moves from core notions such as entropy, probability, and Bayesian reasoning toward algorithms for decoding, estimation, learning, and approximate inference. This is not a lightweight introduction to modern artificial intelligence; substantial mathematical engagement is expected. Its value lies in showing why uncertainty can be represented quantitatively, how structure in data can be exploited, and how principles from communication engineering and statistical learning illuminate one another.
