Internet Routing Architectures is a technical networking reference by Sam Halabi, published in its second edition with Danny McPherson, that examines how independent networks exchange reachability information across the Internet. Its central subject is Border Gateway Protocol version 4, or BGP-4, the interdomain protocol used to connect autonomous systems and express routing policy. Rather than treating BGP as a list of commands, the book relates protocol behavior to operational design: address allocation, route aggregation, peering, redundancy, traffic direction, and the interaction between external and internal routing. It moves from Internet structure and routing fundamentals toward configuration-oriented design scenarios, principally using Cisco IOS terminology. The intended reader already understands IP addressing and basic routing, since the value lies in explaining why a policy or topology produces a particular routing outcome. Although written for an earlier phase of Internet growth, the book remains notable as a systematic account of the architectural reasoning behind BGP deployments, especially provider and multihomed customer networks.
