Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez is a nonfiction investigation of the gender data gap: the routine failure to collect, analyze, and apply data that reflects women as well as men. Published in 2019, it argues that many institutions treat the male body, schedule, travel pattern, and social role as the human norm. Women then appear as exceptions rather than as a population whose needs must be built into research and decision making. Drawing on studies and examples from medicine, transport, workplaces, product design, public policy, and emergency planning, Criado Perez traces the material effects of this omission. The book is not principally an account of individual prejudice. Its focus is structural: apparently neutral rules and designs can reproduce inequality when they are based on incomplete evidence. Its purpose is to make those omissions legible, show why data choices are political as well as technical, and establish sex disaggregation and inclusive design as necessary conditions for fairer systems.
