Just for Fun: The Story of an Accidental Revolutionary is a 2001 memoir and technology history by Linus Torvalds, written with David Diamond. It traces Torvalds from a computer oriented childhood in Finland through his university years, the creation of the Linux kernel, and Linux becoming a major force in the emerging open source world. The book is not a technical manual or a complete institutional history of free software. Its central purpose is to explain, in Torvalds's characteristically informal and blunt voice, how a personal programming project acquired global importance without beginning as a planned commercial venture or political campaign. Alongside biographical episodes, it presents his views on programming, operating system design, collaboration, ambition, and technology. The result is most useful as a period document from the early Internet era: it captures how Linux formed around accessible networked collaboration and a maintainer willing to judge contributions by their practical effect. It also preserves the tensions between pragmatic open source development and more ideological accounts of software freedom.
