Kill It with Fire: Manage Aging Computer Systems and Future Proof Modern Ones is a nonfiction technology and management book by software engineer Marianne Bellotti. It addresses a recurring problem in organizations: systems become difficult to change, yet replacing them wholesale can be expensive, risky, and poorly aligned with the work the system actually supports. Bellotti challenges the reflex to treat legacy software as disposable simply because it is old. Instead, she presents modernization as a continuing discipline of understanding architecture, evaluating business value, reducing operational risk, and improving systems incrementally. The book combines software-engineering concerns with organizational realities, including communication, incentives, adoption, and project coordination. Its purpose is not to prescribe a single migration technology or a universal cloud strategy. Rather, it helps readers decide whether change is warranted, identify the most valuable changes, and create conditions in which those changes can endure. Drawing on experience with complicated public-sector and enterprise systems, Bellotti frames aging software as both a technical and human challenge.
