LaTeX: A Document Preparation System is Leslie Lamport’s user guide and reference manual for LaTeX, the macro-based document preparation system built on Donald Knuth’s TeX. The 1994 second edition, associated with LaTeX2e, explains how an author writes a plain-text source file whose commands identify the logical parts of a document and whose compilation produces professionally typeset output. It is both instructional and technical: early material establishes the basic workflow for ordinary documents, while later reference-oriented material addresses document classes, mathematical material, tables, figures, bibliographies, and more specialized facilities. Its central purpose is not to teach visual page design through direct manipulation. Instead, it teaches authors to express structure, then let a consistent typesetting system apply conventions. That orientation made the book particularly important for scientific and technical writing, where equations, citations, cross-references, and long-document consistency are recurrent concerns. Although it reflects the tools and practices of its period, it remains a foundational account of the LaTeX model and of the reasoning behind markup-based document preparation.
