Lords of Finance is a work of narrative economic history by Liaquat Ahamed that examines the international monetary order from the end of World War I through the early years of the Great Depression. Rather than treating the crash of 1929 as a sudden, isolated event, the book traces the policy choices, institutional pressures, and personal rivalries that shaped the global economy in the 1920s. Its center of gravity is the small group of central bankers who dominated monetary policy in the leading financial powers, especially Montagu Norman, Benjamin Strong, Émile Moreau, and Hjalmar Schacht. Ahamed uses their decisions to show how the gold standard, war debts, reparations, and interwar nationalism interacted to make the system fragile. The book is both biography and economic explanation, designed to make a complex period readable while also arguing that the Depression was intensified by failures of judgment at the highest levels of finance.
