John Markoff’s Machines of Loving Grace: The Quest for Common Ground Between Humans and Robots is a nonfiction history and analysis of the ideas that have shaped computing, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Drawing on decades of reporting on technology, Markoff follows the postwar development of intelligent machines from early laboratory projects to contemporary autonomous vehicles, digital assistants, networked devices, and advanced robots. The book is organized around a persistent disagreement: should computers be designed primarily to replace human judgment and labor, or to augment human capacities while people retain meaningful authority? Markoff calls these competing orientations artificial intelligence and intelligence augmentation. Rather than treating technological progress as inevitable, he examines the choices made by researchers, companies, funders, and public institutions. Its purpose is not to predict a single robotic future, but to clarify the technical traditions and social values embedded in automation. The result is an accessible account of why questions about control, accountability, work, and human skill cannot be separated from the design of machines.
