Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason is Michel Foucault first major historical and philosophical study, originally published in French in 1961 and later translated into English in an abridged form. The book examines how Western Europe understood, separated, confined, and medicalized madness from the late Middle Ages through the eighteenth century. It is not a conventional medical history of psychiatry. Instead, Foucault studies the cultural, institutional, legal, and intellectual conditions that made certain forms of behavior recognizable as insanity. His purpose is to show that madness has never been defined only by neutral scientific discovery. It has also been shaped by social order, moral judgment, economic discipline, and the authority of reason. The book became central to later debates in philosophy, history, sociology, psychiatry, and critical theory because it treats mental illness as a field where knowledge and power become deeply entangled.
