Mastery of Non-Mastery in the Age of Meltdown is a 2020 work of anthropology, cultural theory, and experimental ecological reflection by Michael Taussig, emeritus professor of anthropology at Columbia University. Published by the University of Chicago Press, the book examines human relations with nature at a time defined by climate instability, political disorder, technological surveillance, and a weakening belief in ordinary continuity. Taussig does not offer a conventional environmental policy argument or a linear academic monograph. Instead, he develops a fragmentary, poetic, and theoretically dense inquiry into the human desire to dominate nature and the possibility of loosening that desire. Drawing on anthropology, ritual, performance, mimesis, and thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, D. H. Lawrence, Emerson, Bataille, and Proust, the book asks how writing and thought might respond to ecological breakdown without pretending to control it. Its purpose is to unsettle mastery itself and imagine an ethics of attention, imitation, uncertainty, and responsiveness.
