Natural-Born Cyborgs: Minds, Technologies, and the Future of Human Intelligence is a work of philosophy of mind and cognitive science by Andy Clark. First published in 2003, it challenges the popular image of the cyborg as a distant hybrid of human tissue and futuristic machinery. Clark argues instead that human beings have long been cyborgs in a functional sense: our unusually plastic brains readily incorporate tools, symbols, external records, and social practices into perception, memory, reasoning, and action. The book ranges from ordinary supports such as writing and visual diagrams to networked computers, wearable devices, prostheses, and emerging neural interfaces. Its purpose is not simply to predict spectacular technologies, but to revise assumptions about where a mind ends. Clark presents technology as potentially constitutive of human cognition when it is reliably and seamlessly integrated into a persons ongoing activity. The result is an accessible but conceptually demanding account of human intelligence as a collaborative system involving brain, body, environment, and artifacts.
