Necessary Losses is a psychoanalytic nonfiction book by Judith Viorst that examines how human growth depends on giving up what cannot be kept. First published in the 1980s, it became a major bestseller because it offers an unusually clear and humane framework for understanding grief, aging, intimacy, and maturity. Rather than treating loss as a temporary crisis to be overcome, Viorst argues that loss is built into ordinary development: we lose childhood innocence, parental protection, romantic fantasies, unreal expectations of control, and eventually loved ones themselves. Drawing on psychoanalysis, literature, and personal reflection, she presents loss not as a failure of life but as one of the conditions through which a more realistic and fully developed self emerges. The book is serious in subject but accessible in style, making difficult ideas about dependency, separation, and acceptance understandable to general readers.
