Pollution Is Colonialism by Max Liboiron is a work of environmental humanities, science and technology studies, Indigenous studies, and critical geography published by Duke University Press in 2021. The book examines pollution, especially plastic pollution, not as a technical failure or a simple by-product of capitalism, but as a practice made possible by colonial relations to land. Liboiron argues that modern pollution depends on assumptions that land, water, animals, and communities can be used, accessed, measured, and burdened for settler or industrial purposes. Drawing on work at the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research in Newfoundland, the book also asks how scientific methods themselves can either reproduce colonial relations or be redesigned toward more accountable ones. Its purpose is both theoretical and methodological. It critiques dominant pollution science while demonstrating that anti-colonial scientific practice is not merely an ethical supplement to research, but a different way of organizing knowledge, obligation, consent, and responsibility.
