Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence is a 2018 nontechnical business and economics book by Ajay Agrawal, Joshua Gans, and Avi Goldfarb. Rather than treating artificial intelligence as a mysterious imitation of human thought, the authors offer a deliberately narrow and useful interpretation: modern machine learning makes prediction cheaper. In their usage, prediction means using available information to fill in missing information, whether the missing fact concerns a future outcome, a current condition, or an unobserved past event. The book then applies basic economic reasoning to this falling cost. If prediction becomes abundant and inexpensive, organizations will alter workflows, redesign decisions, invest differently in data, and reassess which human capabilities matter most. Written primarily for executives, managers, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers, it aims to replace broad claims about AI disruption with a practical vocabulary for locating opportunities and tradeoffs. Its focus is strategy and decision economics rather than technical instruction in building machine-learning systems.
