Read Write Own: Building the Next Era of the Internet is a nonfiction technology and business book in which investor Chris Dixon argues that the internet is entering a third major phase. His framework moves from the early read era of open protocols and accessible information, through the read-write era of social platforms that made mass publishing simple, to a prospective read-write-own era built with blockchains and tokens. Dixon does not present blockchain chiefly as a vehicle for speculative trading. Instead, he treats it as infrastructure for organizing online networks so that users, creators, and developers can hold a direct stake in the systems they help build. The book explains the technical and economic logic behind this claim while criticizing the concentration of power in large platform companies. Its purpose is both interpretive and prescriptive: to explain how internet architecture shapes ownership and incentives, and to make the case for decentralized networks as an alternative institutional model. The result is an accessible but distinctly pro-web3 argument about technology, governance, and digital property.
