Rebel Yell: The Violence, Passion, and Redemption of Stonewall Jackson is S. C. Gwynne’s narrative biography of Thomas Jonathan Jackson, the Confederate general whose brief Civil War career made him one of the most studied military figures in American history. Published by Scribner in 2014, the book combines military history, biography, and cultural interpretation. Gwynne is especially interested in the compressed period from 1861 to 1863, when Jackson moved from relative obscurity to national fame through battlefield performance at First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. The book also examines Jackson’s earlier life, including hardship, limited schooling, West Point, the Mexican War, teaching at Virginia Military Institute, marriage, religious devotion, and personal eccentricities. Its purpose is not only to recount campaigns but to explain how an awkward, intensely disciplined man became a symbol of Confederate hope, military audacity, and tragic historical memory.
