Serious Money: Walking Plutocratic London is a work of sociology and urban observation by Caroline Knowles. Rather than offering a conventional economic history or a purely journalistic exposé, it traces how extreme wealth is lived, displayed, protected, and spatially organized in London. The book follows a walking methodology, moving from the City through affluent districts such as Mayfair and Kensington and outward toward suburban Surrey, using the city itself as a lens for understanding plutocratic power. Its purpose is not simply to describe the rich, but to examine how wealth reshapes urban space, social relations, and political influence. By combining ethnographic detail with critical analysis, the book challenges the idea that wealth naturally produces social benefit. Instead, it presents plutocratic London as a place of gated enclaves, luxury development, secrecy, and emotional isolation, while also arguing that ordinary citizens help make the city and can imagine different outcomes.
