Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies is a 2014 work of philosophy and popular science by Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom. It examines a conditional but consequential question: if artificial systems came to greatly exceed human cognitive performance across nearly all important domains, how could humanity retain meaningful control over their effects? Rather than predicting a single timetable for advanced AI, Bostrom maps possible routes to superintelligence, analyzes the strategic advantages such systems might acquire, and studies the problem of making their objectives compatible with human interests. The book is best known for bringing the AI control problem and long term existential risk into wider public discussion. Its method is deliberately analytical, using distinctions, hypothetical cases, and strategic reasoning to test assumptions that can appear reassuring at first glance. Bostrom argues that good intentions, apparent intelligence, or initial obedience would not by themselves guarantee safety. The central purpose is therefore preparatory: to identify design, governance, and coordination problems before highly capable systems make those problems harder or impossible to solve.
