Superminds: The Surprising Power of People and Computers Thinking Together is a nonfiction work on collective intelligence by Thomas W. Malone, an MIT Sloan professor and founding director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence. Rather than treating intelligence as a quality possessed only by individual people or advanced machines, Malone examines systems in which many participants coordinate, exchange information, make choices, and learn. He calls these systems superminds. Companies, markets, democracies, scientific communities, and online platforms can all be understood through this lens. The book combines management thinking, social science, technology analysis, and a forward-looking account of artificial intelligence. Its main purpose is to redirect attention from the familiar question of whether computers will replace people toward the more consequential question of how people and computers can become more capable together. Malone argues that digital technology can improve collective problem-solving, but it does not automatically do so. Outcomes depend on how human goals, participation, information flows, and technological tools are organized.
