Talk to the Elephant: Design Learning for Behavior Change is a professional guide to workplace learning design by Julie Dirksen, an instructional designer and author of Design for How People Learn. Rather than treating training as the automatic answer to a performance problem, the book examines the persistent gap between knowing a desired action and carrying it out in daily work. Its central concern is behavior change: why employees may understand a policy, procedure, or skill yet continue with established habits. Dirksen brings behavioral science into the practice of learning and development, combining ideas from cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, neuroscience, user experience, and instructional design. The title uses the Elephant and Rider metaphor to distinguish reflective reasoning from emotional, automatic, and situational forces. The book is aimed primarily at professionals who design adult learning interventions, including instructional designers, learning leaders, and performance consultants. Its purpose is to help them diagnose barriers accurately, select proportionate interventions, and test whether designs change real behavior rather than merely produce completed courses.
