Robin Hanson’s The Age of Em: Work, Love, and Life When Robots Rule the Earth is a work of economic and social forecasting centered on whole-brain emulation. Its premise is not conventional artificial intelligence: a human brain is scanned in enough detail to reproduce its functional patterns in software, creating an emulated person, or em. Hanson examines what could follow if such ems became cheap enough to copy, operate at varying speeds, and perform most economically valuable work. Rather than treating this possibility chiefly as a philosophical puzzle, he applies tools from economics, organizational theory, sociology, computing, and physical infrastructure analysis. The resulting scenario is deliberately concrete, addressing labor markets, cities, inequality, law, relationships, mortality, energy, and political power. The book does not claim that this future is certain. Its main purpose is to demonstrate that social consequences of a radically disruptive technology can be analyzed systematically, using conditional reasoning grounded in familiar incentives and constraints.
