The Art of Doing Science and Engineering: Learning to Learn is a collection of Richard Hamming’s wide-ranging lectures on how scientists, engineers, and technical professionals can develop habits that make original work more likely. Adapted from a capstone course he taught at the US Naval Postgraduate School, it is not a conventional textbook or a step-by-step research manual. Hamming uses episodes from mathematics, computing, physics, and the history of invention to examine how important problems are recognized, framed, and pursued. His central concern is style of thinking: the practical intellectual dispositions that help a person move beyond competent routine work. The book connects technical knowledge with judgment, curiosity, communication, preparation, and persistence. It also treats failures as evidence about methods and assumptions rather than as material for hero worship or simple morale lessons. Its informal, lecture-derived structure includes repetition and digression, but that structure serves its purpose: approaching difficult questions about creative work from multiple directions. The result is an analytical guide to learning continuously in fields that change faster than formal curricula.
