The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Third Edition is a nontechnical but wide-ranging guide to the principles and practice of designing games. Written by game designer and educator Jesse Schell, it addresses the creation of video games while deliberately drawing lessons from board games, card games, sports, toys, and interactive experiences. Its organizing device is a large collection of lenses: focused sets of questions that help a designer inspect a game from a particular perspective. Rather than presenting design as a linear formula, the book treats it as iterative problem solving across rules, player experience, aesthetics, story, technology, and business constraints. The third edition updates the framework with discussion and examples relevant to VR, AR, free-to-play systems, hybrid forms, and newer commercial games. Its purpose is not to prescribe one genre or production method. It provides a vocabulary and a repeatable process for recognizing design weaknesses, generating alternatives, testing assumptions, and revising toward an experience players will want to return to.
