The Blockchain and the New Architecture of Trust is a 2018 work of technology policy and legal analysis by Kevin Werbach, a Wharton professor specializing in the business, legal, and social implications of emerging technologies. Rather than treating blockchain as a purely technical innovation or a vehicle for cryptocurrency speculation, the book examines how distributed ledgers reorganize the ways people coordinate, exchange value, and manage uncertainty. Its central purpose is corrective as well as explanatory: Werbach disputes the claim that blockchain eliminates trust. He argues instead that it creates a distinct trust architecture, one that shifts reliance from familiar institutions toward software, cryptography, consensus processes, and governance arrangements. The book places Bitcoin and related systems in the longer history of trust supported by personal relationships, intermediaries, and the state. It also considers the difficult practical questions often overlooked in promotional accounts: errors, fraud, disputes, accountability, regulation, and the limits of automated agreements. The result is a grounded framework for assessing when blockchain systems are useful and what they require to operate credibly.
