The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect is a 2018 nonfiction work by computer scientist Judea Pearl, written with science writer Dana Mackenzie. Aimed at general readers while drawing on modern statistics, artificial intelligence, and philosophy of science, it argues that science needs tools for asking causal questions rather than merely measuring associations. Pearl presents the history of a long statistical reluctance to speak rigorously about causes, then explains the framework that helped change that situation. Its central devices are causal diagrams, the Ladder of Causation, and the do operator, which distinguishes observing an event from actively intervening to produce it. The book also considers confounding, randomized experiments, and counterfactual questions about what would have happened under different choices. Its purpose is not simply to warn that correlation is not causation. Instead, it explains when causal conclusions can be justified, what assumptions they require, and why this capacity matters for scientific explanation, policy, medicine, and more capable artificial intelligence.
