The Closing of the American Mind is Allan Bloom's 1987 work of cultural criticism and political philosophy about the condition of American higher education. Written by a University of Chicago scholar shaped by classical philosophy, the book argues that universities have weakened their central task: forming students capable of serious reflection on truth, virtue, freedom, and the good life.
