The Computer and the Brain is a short, posthumously published work by mathematician and computer pioneer John von Neumann, assembled from unfinished Silliman Memorial Lecture notes prepared in the mid 1950s. It is neither a neuroscience textbook nor a technical manual. Instead, it is a foundational essay in comparative thinking: von Neumann asks what can be learned by placing electronic computers and nervous systems side by side. Beginning with the design and operation of early computing machines, he considers the brain as an information-processing system with radically different physical constraints, scale, reliability, and modes of signaling. His central purpose is not to reduce thought to a simple machine analogy. Rather, it is to clarify where the analogy is productive and where it fails. The book belongs to the early intellectual history of computer science, cybernetics, and artificial intelligence, while retaining interest as a lucid record of how one of the architects of modern computing approached cognition. A later foreword by Ray Kurzweil situates its continuing historical importance.
