The Dream Machine: J.C.R. Licklider and the Revolution That Made Computing Personal is a work of technology history and intellectual biography by M. Mitchell Waldrop. It traces the emergence of interactive computing and networked communication through the career, ideas, and institutional influence of psychologist and computer visionary J.C.R. Licklider. Rather than treating the personal computer and the internet as inevitable products of technical progress, Waldrop examines the researchers, funders, laboratories, and debates that made particular futures possible. Licklider did not build a famous consumer machine or found a major company. His importance lay in articulating a human-centered conception of computing and in helping organize research communities capable of pursuing it. The book moves from early mainframe culture through ARPA sponsored research, networking, and the ideas later developed at places such as Xerox PARC. Its purpose is both historical and interpretive: to explain how computers ceased to be primarily tools for centralized calculation and became media for individual thought, collaboration, and communication.
