Steven Weinberg's The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe is a landmark work of popular science that explains what modern cosmology could say about the earliest moments after the Big Bang. First published in 1977 and later revised, the book brings together astronomy, thermodynamics, nuclear physics, and particle physics to describe how an expanding, cooling universe moved from an extremely hot early state toward the conditions that made galaxies, stars, and matter as we know them possible. Weinberg, a Nobel Prize winning theoretical physicist, writes for scientifically curious general readers rather than specialists, but he does not reduce the subject to metaphor alone. His purpose is to show how evidence such as galactic redshifts, the cosmic microwave background, and light element abundances supports a coherent reconstruction of the universe's infancy. The book is also known for its sober reflections on scientific understanding and cosmic meaning.
