The Great Global Transformation: National Market Liberalism in a Multipolar World is a work of political economy by Branko Milanovic, a leading scholar of income inequality and global capitalism. Building on his earlier books about global inequality and the varieties of capitalism, Milanovic examines how the world economy is moving away from the era of United States led neoliberal globalization toward a more fragmented and multipolar order. The book focuses especially on the United States and China, not simply as rival states, but as societies whose internal class structures have been reshaped by globalization in sharply different ways. Its purpose is analytical rather than prescriptive: Milanovic seeks to explain why protectionism, tariffs, economic coercion, populism, and renewed nationalism have become central features of contemporary politics. The core concept, national market liberalism, names an emerging system in which market mechanisms remain powerful inside national economies while cross border liberalism and social liberal norms weaken.
