The Grieving Body: How the Stress of Loss Can Be an Opportunity for Healing is a nonfiction book by neuroscientist and psychologist Mary-Frances O Connor that examines grief through the lens of physiology, psychology, and clinical science. Rather than treating bereavement only as an emotional event, the book shows how loss can affect cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, liver, lung, brain, and nervous system function, and why stress during grief can change health outcomes. It also updates older stage-based models of grief by presenting grief as a learning process in which the brain must adapt to a world altered by absence. Structured in two main parts, the book combines research findings, conceptual explanation, and practical guidance for healing. It is aimed both at people experiencing grief and at professionals such as social workers, clinicians, and caregivers who support bereaved people.
